Hello fellow introverts! Have you been watching couponing videos where the most extroverted women you’ve ever met are cheerleading about their latest couponing haul? Are you thinking about how scary couponing would be, handing coupons to a person, maintaining small talk while they scan them, having to ask questions if your discount doesn’t show up the way you expected? Would you rather just hide forever then expose yourself to that level of anxiety? I get you SO MUCH. But because I, too, am an introvert, and I can help. Couponing for introverts is possible! Here are some discounts that you can get with somewhere between no interaction at all, and nothing more than a polite nod or quick ‘thank you’.

Couponing for Introverts - A woman sits on a cozy blanket sipping tea while finding amazing deals online.

First up, go check out my article on casual couponing. You need Honey because you shop online a lot. You need Ibotta because you get your discount just by scanning a receipt. And you need a Walgreens loyalty account (don’t worry, you can sign up online).

I’m going to assume you read that other article on casual couponing and retained that information. So I’m going to move onto my Walgreens hack.

  • Go to the Walgreens website. Navigate to their weekly ads. Then click the coupons tab.
  • “Sign in” by entering the phone number associated with your loyalty account.
  • Sort the coupons by “highest value”.
  • Then start “clipping” coupons for whatever you might want to buy.

CAUTION: If you clip two coupons for the same product, they will use the lower value one first. That’s why I sort by value, so the good coupons are more likely to show up first.

  • Clip like crazy. Clip your maybes. And clip anything you’ve ever thought of buying, just in case.
  • Then, whenever you’re ready, head to the store.
  • Go to the Walgreens website or app on your phone, sign in, and choose your ‘clipped’ coupons. Then collect up the things you want. Read the shelf tags carefully – their coupons often overlap with other sales, and with ways to earn bonus points or paper bonus coupons (I know, but they’ve always been really nice to me about in store coupons.) With some cleverness and luck, you can find things at prices between shockingly cheap and sometimes actually negative cost when you count in the bonus points.
  • Then checkout. When you enter your rewards phone number, your digital coupons will be added to the transaction automatically. Even the cashier doesn’t see them until the end. And that’s how you get your discount. Almost no interaction required.

But what if a coupon doesn’t work?

Don’t stay there at the store and ask the cashier, there’s not usually a lot they can do. Instead, go home, go back to the Walgreens website, and use their live chat to ask about it. They’re usually really nice about it an will either correct their mistake, or gently explain why your coupon didn’t work, so you can avoid the same mistake in the future.

CVS will also often have at least a few online clippable coupons, so they might be worth checking into as well.

Hopefully this will give you some ways to ease into couponing. Maybe with some practice you’ll get comfortable enough to start stacking deals, or not. But either way at least you’re paying less than full retail!

What about shopping online?

Of course online shopping will be an easier fit for your introverted self. There are a few stores that are well suited to getting deals online. First up, yet again, is Walgreens. Most of the in-store strategies work as well, or nearly as well online. The biggest downside is that they don’t have a lot of food available online, if that’s what you buy there. If you need over the counter medical supplies, though, they’re a good deal gold mine.

I also find outstanding online deals from Michaels, Joann’s, Ulta, and Old Navy regularly. A bonus to shopping online from these brands is that they will usually have more variety than what’s in the stores (unless you live in a massive city, usually), and they keep much more in stock so they’re more likely to have what you want on hand.

If you have Honey installed, you can find good deals at thousands of online stores, without having to talk to a single human. You just go find what you want, put it in the cart, and then honey can automatically test out every coupon they know about. You should always check your own email, too, because sometimes you’ll find single use or personalized coupons that honey can’t know about.

If you have an account set up with an online store it can also sometimes work to put things in your cart and leave it for a day – I often receive email coupons to encourage me to finish up my transaction. And if you’re not desperate to get what you’re going to order, leaving you cart full and testing honey’s coupons every day for a while until you find a good one can also pay off.

I hope you have some ideas about how to benefit from couponing without having to endure uncomfortable public situations now. Planning ahead before shopping in person and looking for great deals online are two of the best ways to get your deals quickly and painlessly!
