If you’re a crafty or home-decorate-y person, you’ve probably shopped at a JoAnns. If you’re very crafty, like me, and your JoAnn’s is very close to your house, like me, you might even shop there a lot. (Really, though, it’s closer than my grocery store. Like I’m not going to stop there all the time?) I’ve worked on my couponing at Joann Fabrics skills for a while, these are my best tricks.
Understanding the JoAnns sale and coupon structure can help you save a bunch of money shopping there. They have a few ways to save you money.

Sign up for their emails.
They email out really good coupons fairly often, and all you have to do is show them the coupon on your smart phone to cash in.
Understand the five “kinds” of merchandise.
For the purposes of discounts and coupons, there are five kinds of products in the store.
Regular priced – is exactly that. Things at their normal full retail price.
Sale – these are items that are currently discounted.
Door Buster – these are super deep discounts on regular merchandise. In the flyer/email, they’ll be labeled specifically as ‘door busters’.
Clearance – this is last chance merchandise marked down.
Non-discountable – they sell a lot of premium goods like Cricut Cutters that either don’t go on sale, or only go on very specific sale. Your 60% off one item coupon won’t work on these :(.

Check their website for sales and coupons.
Often they’ll have some coupons that you can just access from their website and print off. Instead of printing, they also accept it if you show these coupons to the cashier on your smart phone. You can also find their weekly ads on their website.
Manufacturer coupons aren’t relevant at JoAnn’s, so you’re really going to have to pay attention to their internal promotions to find you best sale and coupon opportunities. A common coupon format at JoAnn’s is a XX% off one item – often 30 to 60%. This is typically one, non-sale item, and carries lots of exclusions, like Cricut Cutters, Singer Sewing Machines, and other name brand large purchase products.

JoAnn’s also offers XX% off your entire purchase coupons, sometimes including sale items and sometimes excluding sale items. I’ve never seen it include door busters, but there’s always a slim chance they will, especially near Christmas.
You’ll typically find the best savings when you can find a sale priced product that you want, and you also have a % off all items including sale coupon. This can be especially useful online, especially if you want a lot of something. Then you aren’t limited to just what’s in stock at the store level.

Clearance items are sometimes included in coupons. If they’re not, be careful that the product is really marked down enough to be worth buying. I’ve seen a lot of clearance product at JoAnn’s priced higher than regular price with a coupon would be, which isn’t a good enough deal for me.
Save Your Receipts
When you’re done shopping, keep your receipt, and any other register coupons that might be handed to you. Those are often % off one item coupons that you can use *in addition* to whatever online/email coupons you have.

Ibotta will give you rewards just for scanning your coupons into the app, and as I’m writing this that amount is 5% back. That’s an incredibly quick way to knock down your purchase price a little more.
If you can plan your projects ahead, and wait for a good coupon & sale combo, you can save a lot of money at JoAnn’s, just by understanding how their promos work!
